Trade Unions Want 20% Raise of Teacher Salaries

Sofia, June 9 (BTA) - Podkrepa Confederation of Labour Monday
submitted a letter to Prime Minister Boyko Borissov suggesting
that the Bulgarian government relocate 87 million leva from the
executive budget to the budget of the Ministry of Education and
Science, says the document issued by the trade union's Education
unit and signed by its President Yulian Petrov.

These 87 million leva will be used to raise the salaries of the
people employed in education by 20 per cent, the trade union
says in the letter.

According to Podkrepa, the necessary funds can be relocated from
better collectability at the beginning of the year and from the
700 million leva excess revenue.

The proposal was occasioned by the Ninth National Conference of
the Education Trade Union chapter which decided on the 20 per
cent increase of salaries for teachers and staff.

The Education chapter of the trade union recalls that Bulgarian
teachers are the poorest in Europe, and now are even poorer than
their Romanian counterparts, while Greek teachers, at the
height of the crisis, have thrice the salaries of their
Bulgarian peers.
