DSB Leader Kanev Urges Resignation of RIA Leadership over Intransparent Procurement for Hemus Motorway

Varna, on the Black Sea, January 18 (BTA) - Speaking in Varna on Monday, Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) leader Radan Kanev said that the procurement procedure for the first two lots of Hemus motorway was intransparent and has compromised the entire project. Kanev said that the interests of the largest oligarchs in Bulgaria can be seen behind the anonymous offshore companies that won the tender at a price higher by 60 per cent over the one which was announced initially.

Kanev blamed the Road Infrastructure Agency RIA) leadership and urged for its resignation. He said that if the project developed in a similar manner it will become impossible to pay for.

The DSB leader urged the Prosecutor General to immediately launch an investigation into the procurement for the construction of the motorway.

Kanev said that the decision for a possible withdrawal of his party DSB from the Reformist Bloc will be taken at DSB's national meeting on March 13. Kanev said that on January 23, DSB will hold a meeting of municipal and regional leaders, mayors and municipal councillors.

According to him, the new right-wing project is not the end of DSB. He added that DSB will seek to increase its support by attracting broad civil and political circles with common positions towards the incumbent government and a common vision for the need of reforms in the country. Kanev ruled out a coalition at this stage.
