DSB Leader Radan Kanev Forecasts Early Elections in May

Veliko Turnovo, Northern Bulgaria, January 18 (BTA) - Democrats for Strong Bulgaria (DSB) leader Radan Kanev forecasts early elections in May, he told a BTA-hosted news conference here on Monday. Kanev said that during the party's national conference he will urge all DSB structures to get ready for early elections in May of 2016.

According to Kanev, the Reformist Bloc's ministers who want to stay on their posts risk becoming isolated from their own parties. It is not sure whether GERB would want to govern in this format, he said.

"The notions of power and opposition could be irrelevant in the face of early parliamentary elections," he noted, adding that he believes that the crises in the country will be further aggravated.

According to him, the dramatic facts and revelations made by (former) judge Roumyana Chenalova about the state of the judicial reform should be used as a public signal for an independent investigation, with public accountability and international participation. Kanev said that Chenalova has made enough allegations, but only a public investigation can show whether they are a true.

Kanev believes that a strong international team of investigators from Italy, Romania and Bavaria can put an end to the drama in the Bulgarian justice system with a few dozen magistrates in prison.

The DSB leader said that a new political project is in the making, but announcing it is a matter of political tactics.
