Navigation along Bulgarian-Romanian Stretch of Danube Banned Due to Ice Floe

Rousse, on the Danube, January 10 (BTA) - Navigation along the Bulgarian-Romanian section of the Danube was banned as of noon on Tuesday, Head of the River Supervision Directorate Rousse with the Maritime Adminstration Ivan Zhekov said.

The decision to ban navigation was made after consultations with the Romanian side.

Zheckov said that a number of factors complicate the situation along the river. Navigation in Romania and Serbia has been halted. The ice floe in the Bulgarian stretch of the river is 70 per cent at Silistra and 60 per cent at Rousse. The situation is further compounded by the low water levels.

Navigation will be allowed only for emergency and rescue activities.

On the night to Tuesday Rousse broke the record for the lowest temperature on January 10 with temperatures dropping to minus 16.2C. The previous record low temperature on this day was in 2004, minus 14.6C.
