Downward Tendency Observed in Past Ten Years in Number of Prison Inmates

Varna, on the Black Sea, February 16 (BTA) - The number of prison inmates in Bulgaria in the past year remained relatively unchanged at 7,300; however, it has tended to decrease in the course of the past ten years, Director of the Implementation of Punishments Directorate General (IPDG) Gergana Georgiva said here on Thursday. The monthly upkeep of an inmate costs about 800 leva, Georgieva said.

Georgieva, accompanied by Varna prison director Yordan Yordanov, unveiled the recently repaired facility. Yordanov said that the prison meets all requirements and that the value of repairs exceeds one million leva. Twenty-six inmates of the prison are with life sentences, he said.

Repair works are to be carried out in the prisons in Bobov Dol, Pazardjik, Belene and Stara Zagora, Georgieva said, adding that the renovation of the women's prison in Sliven is to be completed by the end of February.
