site.btaEconomy Minister Discusses Improvement of Consumer Rights with EU Commissioner Jourova

Brussels/Sofia, November 30 (BTA) - Economy Minister Emil Karanikolov met with European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality Vera Jourova and Estonian Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Minister Kadri Simson in Brussels on Thursday. They talked about the improvement of consumer rights, the Economy Ministry said in a press release.

The participants in the meeting discussed the improvement of the implementation of the legislation on consumer protection, as part of the preparation of the New Deal for Consumers initiative announced by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. The package of legislative proposals is being elaborated by the Commission and will be presented for debate and adoption during the Bulgarian Presidency of the EU Council. Karanikolov underscored that Bulgaria gives great significance to the consumer policy, as part of the more general priority in the country's work next year towards the improvement of competitiveness on the EU's single internal market.

Also participating in the meeting are representatives of the European Parliament and NGOs, such as the European Consumer Organization (BEUC). It transpired during the event that Bulgaria will continue the work on consumer matters through a meeting with BEUC in Sofia in December.

Karanikolov is in Brussels to participate in a Competitiveness Council, the press release reads.
