Prof Emre Atilgan from Trakya University in the Turkish city of Edirne said the university created specialized laboratories for environmental assessment thanks to a project implemented under the Interreg – IPA CBC Bulgaria – Turkey Programme. Prof Atilgan from the Department of Health Management addressed the closing conference of BTA's Europe in the Balkans: A Common Future project.
The event was held in the Bulgarian resort of Albena on Saturday.
Prof Atilgan said Trakya University partnered on the project with the Prof Dr Assen Zlatarov University of Burgas. He called the project "a really strategic partnership". More than EUR 3.3 million was attracted in funding. Part of the Interreg financing went towards an infrastructure upgrade at Trakya University Edirne and towards research and activities raising the public's awareness of the university.
Three environmental assessment laboratories were equipped under the project. Detailed studies on air pollution and solid waste pollution in the Edirne area were prepared. One of the results was a methodology for continuous monitoring of environmental resources. The University of Burgas also built a good infrastructure for future research, Atilgan said.
