Bulgarian football legend Hristo Stoichkov will visit the town of Taraclia on April 17 as part of his official visit to Moldova, moldfootball.com reported on Monday. Stoichkov is visiting Moldova as an ambassador of FIFA’s Football for Schools programme, aimed at developing youth sport.
As part of his visit to Taraclia, an agreement is expected to be signed for the construction of new sports infrastructure - an initiative aimed at encouraging football among children and young people in the region. The visit also focuses on supporting educational and sports programmes for the Bulgarian community in Moldova.
Stoichkov’s official trip will take place from April 15 to 17 and includes events in Chisinau and Singera, as well as visits to schools and football facilities. Taraclia will be the final stop on his visit to the country.
The Bulgarian former football player won the Ballon d'Or in 1994 and was runner-up for the FIFA World Player of the Year in 1992 and 1994. In 1994 he helped the national team reach fourth place at the FIFA World Cup, becoming top scorer of the tournament and earning the World Cup Golden Boot. He played for Spanish football giant Barcelona (1990-1995 and 1996-1998) winning the La Liga four times and the European Cup in 1992.
