The 61st Session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations (UN) is to decide on the Special Report on Climate Change in Cities. This was announced at a press conference before the start of the meeting by IPCC Chairman Jim Skea. 

According to him, there are some very important decisions to make in the coming days. The first is about the roadmap - what timeframe the decisions will be taken in the next cycle, he said.

Skea said the IPCC needs to decide on the general shape of the special report on cities and climate change in cities. As an added benefit from holding the forum in Sofia, he said this is a chance to get to know not only Bulgaria more, but also this region as a whole. 

“We also hope to involve the Bulgarian scientific community more in the activities of our international organization. Last but not least, we want to try to raise the level of public awareness on climate change issues,” he added. 

The 61st session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) of the United Nations (UN) is attended by 500 delegates from 195 countries that are part of the IPCC.

They are scheduled to discuss issues related to the preparation of the organization's reports during the seventh assessment cycle, which began last July with the election of a new chair and new members of the IPCC Bureau, the Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) said earlier.

During the opening ceremony, Skea greeted caretaker Environment and Water Minister Petar Dimitrov, Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev, World Meteorological Organization (WMO) President Abdulla Al Mandous, and UNEP Deputy Executive Director Elizabeth Maruma Mrema.
