Temperatures in the mountains on Tuesday are below freezing. The weather is cloudy, there is fog and new snow cover, said Ana Dzhambazova from the Mountain Rescue Service (MRS) with the Bulgarian Red Cross.

The slopes in the mountain resorts of Bansko, Borovets and Pamporovo are open and the facilities are working.

On Vitosha, the season is due to open on December 26, the MRS said, advising people to observe the tourist routes. Skiers and snowboarders should not leave the regulated slopes due to the danger of avalanches. Skiers' and snowboarders' ambitions should be in line with their abilities, Dzhambazova stressed. According to her, problems come when people are not prepared. In the coming days, quite heavy snowfall is expected, she said.

It will be cloudy and snowing in the mountains with highs of around 1C at 1,000 metres and around minus 2C at 2,000 metres above sea level, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) said.
