Athletes from Kenya won the 7th Giurgiu-Ruse Free Spirit Run, which was held on Saturday. The cross-border road race began in Romania's Giurgiu, passed through the Danube Bridge, and ended in Bulgaria's Ruse.
In the men's competition, Albert Tonui finished first by taking the 15-km distance in 47:37 minutes, followed by another Kenyan, Hilary Kimaiyo, and Bulgaria's Ismail Senandzhi.
In the women's competition, Glorius Jepkirui finished first in 54:07 minutes, followed by another Kenyan, Valentine Jebet, and Bulgaria's Marinela Nineva.
Nineva commented for BTA that the run was difficult because the weather was warm and she had participated in many races lately. "I enjoyed the cross-border run a lot and aim to participate every year," she noted.
Over 400 athletes from various countries took part in the Free Spirit Run. The oldest runner was Ivan Grozev, 78.
This year's edition of the cross-border race was part of the events dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Bulgarian Athletics Federation (BAF). BAF President Ivan Kolev was among the event's official guests.
