Speaking at the official opening of the European Weightlifting Championships in Arena Sofia, President of the European Weightlifting Federation Antonio Confliiti said this country has already set a record.

"Bulgaria has 12 Olympic champions in weightlifting. This is a country with traditions in weightlifting. And we are very happy to be back here after 19 years because Bulgaria is our home. Thank you very much for your hospitality and for the great job you have done. Because Bulgaria has already set a record! Just two days ago there was a big concert here. And in 24 hours we already have this fantastic and perfectly arranged and organised hall, which will host our athletes in the coming days," Conflitti said, adding that the championship is extremely important because it is also an Olympic qualifier.

Minister of Youth and Sports Dimitar Iliev took part in the official opening ceremony. He highlighted the great Bulgarian traditions in weightlifting, wished all participants success, and shared his belief that the most prepared will leave Sofia as winners.

Among the official guests at the ceremony were Nebie Kabak, Chair of the Committee for Children, Youth and Sport in the National Assembly, Deputy Minister of Sport Daniela Dasheva, and the Rector of the National Sports Academy Krasimir Petkov.
