Bulgaria and Greece are now more than ever united in their commitment to improving connectivity, boosting economic growth and achieving success in strategic transport initiatives, Greece's Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Staikouras said during the 5th edition of the Sofia Economic Forum, which is taking place on Monday in Sofia.

According to the Greek Minister, Bulgaria and Greece should work closely together to achieve their common goals, and one of the main aspects of this cooperation is the development of key European transport corridors that connect the two countries and ensure the smooth passage of goods and people.

Staikouras highlighted two main corridors. The first corridor connects Bulgaria and Greece with the Western Balkans. "Investing in the modernization and expansion of this corridor not only improves transport infrastructure but also increases economic opportunities," he said. The second corridor connects Black Sea ports with the Baltic and Aegean Seas, providing an alternative for international trade and linking Asia and Africa in line with the concept of solidarity. The route offers a direct link for water transport, improving access to international markets.

The Greek Minister stressed that it is also important to develop high-speed rail lines. "Integrating our rail networks will improve the efficiency of transport systems. The modernization of rail transport will not only reduce costs but also have a positive impact on the environment," Staikouras added. He noted that it is necessary to provide a contractual budget for cross-border projects.

"By working together we are building a future where our transport networks will be more sustainable and our societies more prosperous," he said.
