The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed an agreement with the Bulgarian Energy Ministry to provide advisory support. Under the agreement, teams from the EIB's Advisory Service will assist the Energy Ministry in selecting initiatives to modernise the Maritsa East complex, the EIB said on Wednesday.
They will assess the condition of the complex, including its advantages such as existing infrastructure and skilled workforce. The assessment will serve as the basis for a roadmap for investors on the transition to cleaner energy.
The advisory support will help the Ministry to ensure the transition of the complex in line with economic and social needs and EU rules, the EIB added.
The Energy Ministry plans to transform the Maritsa East complex to preserve jobs and attract investors. The complex is among the largest open-pit lignite mines in Europe, with several coal-fired power plants.
