The Bulgarian pavilion has been ranked among the top 10 most impressive exhibitions at the Venice Biennale 2023 by Artribune, the largest and most popular media platform for culture and contemporary art in Italy, the Union of Architects said. Besides Bulgaria, the ranking also includes Switzerland, Canada, Austria, the Scandinavian countries, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Uzbekistan, Latvia and Lithuania.

The selection includes 10 successful and spectacular pavilions in terms of both visual layout and conceptual clarity. "The compelling and memorable installation in Bulgaria's pavilion tells the story of the depopulation of a country that was once agricultural and the desertification of villages and, in some cases, cities. Alexander Dumarey's photographs document the abandoned schools in a country that has lost thousands of its citizens over the past 40 years. But there is hope, and the pavilion presents not only the problem but also possible solutions," says Artribune.

The Bulgarian Pavilion at the 2023 Venice Architecture Biennale was opened officially on May 20 by caretaker Culture Minister Nayden Todorov. It presents the exhibition “Education Is the Movement from Darkness to Light” including photos by Brussels-based Alexander Dumarey. The project focuses on problem of depopulation and abandoned schools in small settlements.

It is open to visitors at Sala Tiziano, Fondamenta Zattere Ai Gesuati, 919, 30123 Venezia, IT.

Bulgaria's participation in the prestigious forum in 2023 is under the patronage of the Vice President Iliana Iotova.

The 18th Venice Architecture Biennale is entitled "Laboratory of the Future".

The Venice Biennale runs from May 20 to November 26, 2023.
