The LUNAR Festival of Lights returns to Sofia for a new edition May 8-11 to illuminate some of the city’s iconic buildings and urban spaces. It will transform the central part of the Bulgarian capital with exciting projection mapping shows and light installations, said the Sofia representation of the European Parliament.
LUNAR presents important messages about the future of the planet, technological development, freedom of self-expression and more, and its program is attended by more than half a million residents and guests of the capital.
Last year the festival attracted over 600,000 visitors, they said.
This year will be the fourth edition of LUNAR.
Artists from all around the globe will show compelling digital art on the Sofia streets on each of the four festival evenings, from Thursday to Sunday, between 9:00 p.m. and midnight. These will transform central Sofia into an open-air gallery with artworks specially created for the city’s most iconic buildings, parks, and squares.
Access to all artworks will be free of charge.
The past three years of LUNAR have shown more than 90 light artworks created by 57 artists and studios from 18 countries.
Marin Petkov, Founder of MP-STUDIO and LUNAR and Art Director of Festival of Lights International Productions GmbH is quoted as saying that the festival team is happy that for four years now they have been able to create a stage for innovative and high-quality light art and that LUNAR is becoming one of the traditional light festivals in Europe. „This year, together with our partners we have prepared a carefully curated artistic program that will surprise and inspire all visitors,” he said.
The organizer and main artistic collective behind the event is the Bulgarian visual effects studio MP-STUDIO, in partnership with one of the most famous light festivals in the world, Festival of Lights International. The event is realized with the support of the European Parliament in Bulgaria, the Representation of the European Commission in Bulgaria, Sofia Municipality under the patronage of the Mayor Vasil Terziev, the Ministry of Tourism and with the financial support of the "Creation" program of the National Culture Fund.
