In a European Newsroom interview, EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said that she plans to visit Belgrade at end-April and expects to find a pro-European government in place, reported Tanjug. She voiced hope that the new Serbian cabinet will support reforms, adding that Serbia may open at least one more negotiation cluster with the EU in 2025.
The full interview with Commissioner Kos will be published later this week.
Kos recalled previous meetings between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic, herself, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, during which Serbia confirmed its commitment to implement two specific reforms. These include media legislation, the electoral law, establishing a regulatory body for electronic media, and fulfilling key provisions of a non-paper from the previous year. According to Kos, meeting these requirements would allow Serbia to move forward in the EU accession process.
She also said she had engaged with NGOs and encouraged Vucic to involve civil society more actively in the accession dialogue.
Kos emphasized that the renewed momentum in the EU enlargement process applies equally to the Western Balkans, Ukraine, and Moldova. She noted that this new EU vision offers a positive shift for candidate countries, though clarified that progress remains merit-based and should not be measured by comparing regions.
