A duty of all Bulgarian democrats, anti-communists, and those who hold human life as the highest value is to preserve the memory of this tragic date, to speak the truth about it, and not to let it be forgotten, GERB-UDF MP Stefan Marinov said in a statement on Wednesday on the occasion of the centenary of the bombing of St Nedelya Church.

“We bow our heads today before the innocent victims of the attack, carried out by communist terrorists, who blew up the church on Holy Thursday, April 16, 1925,” the declaration reads.

Marinov said that a century after this mass murder and the desecration of an Orthodox church with innocent blood, there has still been no apology or remorse from the heirs of the Bulgarian communists. “Moreover, attempts are made to forget the perpetrators, to avoid calling them by their true names, and to conceal which party organised the bloody attack,” he added.

He further described it as a shameful and tragic act inflicted on Bulgaria by the Bulgarian Communist Party, which was subordinate to the Comintern. The declaration notes that this unprecedented terror was financed and supported by Soviet Russia as part of a plan to destabilise European states, using subversive actions to topple legitimate governments and establish worker-peasant administrations based on the Soviet model.

Marinov noted that 213 people were killed and over 500 were wounded in the bombing, including 12 generals, 20 senior military officers, three MPs, the Mayor of Sofia, and many civilians, among them nine children.
