The National History Museum (NHM) presents the exhibition "Ancient finds, new discoveries. Archaeological Season 2024". It will be inaugurated by the museum's director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bonni Petrunova on January 23, the organizers said.
"In 2024, the Museum conducted archaeological surveys and field research at 22 sites. As a result, more than 1,400 movable cultural objects were discovered, covering almost all archaeological periods of Bulgarian lands - from prehistory to the Middle Ages," the team said. They noted that the research is financially and logistically supported by the NHM, the Ministry of Culture, local municipalities and private donors. Scientific partners such as the Centre for Underwater Archaeology, the Regional History Museum in Sofia, the National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and many other city museums are also actively involved.
The research covers a wide geographical area - from the banks of the Struma and Mesta rivers, through the Rhodope and Sakar mountains, to the Black Sea coast and Dobrudzha. Both regularly explored sites and those requiring rescue excavations were studied. The sites include settlements and burial mounds, ancient and medieval fortresses.
The archaeological season was extremely successful, with many new discoveries made under the guidance of scientists from the National History Museum and other institutions.
"With each passing year, the NHM manages not only to replenish its collections, but also to expand knowledge about the history of Bulgarian lands, as well as to present new archaeological discoveries to the general public," the Museum team said.
