The 8th edition of a Christmas concert took place at the National Palace of Culture (NDK) on Thursday. By tradition, the concert was held on December 19, the birthday of composer and architect Dimitar Nenov (1901-1953), and Nenov's oratorio Christmas was performed. The concert is organized by the Yordan Kamdzhalov Foundation.
The concert featured the Genesis Orchestra conducted by Yordan Kamdzhalov, the Music Laboratory for the Human Self choir conducted by Maya Vassileva, with Kamdzhalov as artistic director, the Smiling Stars children's choir conducted by Vassileva, and soloist Girgina Girginova.
Talking about Dimitar Nenov, Kamdzhalov stressed that 122 years ago to the day, "a giant was born in the small town of Razgrad". He said the ninth edition of the concert will be held in 2025 and the oratorio will be performed for the ninth year in a row. "We want this tradition to continue until 2050," the conductor said.
President Rumen Radev, who attended the concert, said a crisis can be overcome only with a clear national goal and unity.
"The deeper the crises - political, social, economic, military - the more we need to talk about culture and produce culture, because a crisis can only be overcome with a clear national goal and unity, and this is only possible when our society is united around spiritual values shared by all," said the President. "It is culture that builds these values; culture is the most important bonding element in our society."
Turning to Kamdzhalov, Radev said: "I would like to express our deep gratitude to you, to your foundation, to these amazing musicians and singers, and especially to the wonderful Bulgarian children, for tonight's celebration. A true celebration of Bulgarian culture, of the boundless Bulgarian talent."
"Tonight you are not only resurrecting a brilliant Bulgarian - an architect, composer, pianist and public figure, you are also working and making efforts for the most important thing - for continuity in our culture," said the President.
