Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has signed a decree awarding the Order of Cultural Merit, grade Grand Officer, to Bulgaria's Culture Minister, Maestro Nayden Todorov, his Ministry said here Monday.

The award is given in recognition of Todorov's long-standing efforts in bringing the two cultures closer together. The proposal for it came from the Romanian Ambassador in Sofia, Brandusa Ioana Predescu.

Todorov's career is closely linked to Romania. In the last 20 years he has conducted regularly the major Romanian orchestras, including the Romanian National Radio Orchestra and the Bucharest National Opera.

In 2024, Todorov organized a concert of the Sofia Philharmonic at the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest. On March 3, 2025, the Sofia Philharmonic will be back there with an all-Bulgarian programme.

As part of his policy for the return of Bulgarian classical music to the attention of world's musical elite, in his capacity as Director of the Sofia Philharmonic, Nayden Todorov has worked with many distinguished Romanian musicians.

As Culture Minister, Maestro Todorov has worked hard to deepen the cultural ties between the two countries. At meetings with Romania's Culture Minister Raluca Turcan, they floated an idea for a common digital platform to promote the cultural heritage and events of the Balkan countries.
