A concert marking the 125th birth anniversary of Bulgarian composer Pancho Vladigerov took place in the Small Hall of the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest on Wednesday. A documentary exhibition was arranged in front of the hall.

The event was organized by the Pancho Vladigerov House Museum together with the hosts of the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, with the help of the Bulgarian Embassy in Romania and with support from Sofia City Hall.

BTA was a media partner of the event.

Bulgaria's Ambassador Radko Vlaykov told BTA this was one of the most remarkable events in the Embassy's cultural calendar and thanked the team at the Vladigerov House Museum.

The diplomat said: "We are very happy that this concert is a great occasion for musicians in Romania to once again remember Pancho Vladigerov's work. His works are performed in Romania to this day." He added that through Vladigerov, Romanian audiences feel respect for Bulgarian music and culture in general.

The concert titled "In the Style of Vladigerov" featured works which made up a chamber programme in 1941. They were performed by Stoimen Peev (violin), Atanas Krastev (cello) and Martina Tabakova (piano).

The exhibition "Pancho Vladigerov in the Musical Kaleidoscope of the 20th Century. Directions, Connections, Reflections" shows the composer had numerous contacts with the world music elite. One of the exhibition's co-authors, Nadya Sotirova, director of the house museum, told BTA the documentary exhibition lays emphasis on Vladigerov's contacts with Romanian artists. The exhibits feature historical accounts of his works included in the repertoire of Romanian musicians.

Sotirova said Vladigerov first visited Bucharest in 1934 when he performed at the Romanian Athenaeum. It was his professional and later personal contacts that led him to compose his Romanian works in 1942 and 1943. He dedicated the Four Romanian Symphonic Dances to his colleagues of the Bucharest Philharmonic and their conductor, George Georgescu, and his two Romanian Symphonic Sketches to George Enescu.

The museum's curator, Mariya Trosheva, said the exhibition will be on at the National University of Music Bucharest between December 2 and early January 2025.
