Bulgarian kaval player and composer Vladimir Velichkov won a silver medal at the Global Music Awards for his instrumental solo performance in his album Awakening, the official website of the awards shows.

The production, released in 2023, combines traditional and contemporary techniques in playing the kaval, the musician wrote on Facebook.

Last August, the Toronto-based music platform Ethnocloud proposed Awakening for a 2024 GRAMMY ballot consideration in the Contemporary Instrumental Album (C) category.

Here's how Ethnocloud describes the Bulgarian on its website:

Velichkov is actively giving concerts in Bulgaria, Germany, Russia, Poland, Greece, Hungary, and Belgium. He has participated in many national and international projects for ethno, jazz, folk, and rock music. He composes film music and music for TV commercials. He has collaborated with world-famous musicians, such as Matt Cooper, Stanley Jordan, and Matt Mason - music producer of the movie Waterworld (with Kevin Costner).
