The 46th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting concluded in Kochi, India, on Thursday, the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute reported Friday. Bulgaria was represented by Tsveti Romanska and Sasha Raycheva from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the head of the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute, Prof Christo Pimpirev, and the Deputy Director of the National Polar Research Centre, Dragomir Mateev.

Bulgaria is a full consultative member along with 28 other countries.

Prof Pimpirev and Mateev held many talks about logistics support and coordination of Antarctic activities during the current astral season with members of the delegations of Spain, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil. A brand-new Spanish icebreaker will join the current two polar ships of that country in early 2025.

Bulgaria should begin preparation for designing and constructing a new polar polar research ship, which will take at least five years. That is because many countries show increased demands for the Ice Continent's natural resources; almost all Antarctic nations are setting aside huge resources for the construction of new ships and research stations. In the last five years, China built five new bases in Antarctica, the press release reads.
