The 2023 Bulgarian Ambassadors of Culture, selected in an annual poll of Bulgarian National Radio (BNR), received their awards at an official ceremony at the Sofia City Art Gallery on Wednesday.

The 12 award winners are Sofia Opera and Ballet Manager Plamen Kartalov, opera singer Alexandrina Pendatchanska, conductor Dessislava Stefanova, violinist Vasko Vassilev, kaval flutist Theodosii Spassov, film director Stephan Komandarev, theatre director Yavor Gardev, actor Rousy Chanev, writers Zachary Karabashliev and Teodora Dimova, and painters Dili Bozadzhieva and Kina Bagovska.

The Bulgarian Ambassadors of Culture poll is aimed to highlight the achievements of distinguished artists and writers whose work has transcended the national boundaries and has made Bulgaria recognizable on the world cultural scene.

The nominations were made by BNR listeners, and the winners were selected by a jury chaired by Culture Minister Krastyu Krastev. The jury also comprised Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) Director General Kiril Valchev, State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad Executive Director Raina Mandzhukova, the Director of the State Institute of Culture under the Foreign Minister, Snezhana Yoveva-Dimitrova, and BNR journalist Nina Tsaneva.

The event was held under the auspices of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel. The official guests at the award ceremony also included Labour and Social Policy Minister Ivanka Shalapatova and Innovation and Growth Minister Milena Stoicheva.
