Raffaela de Marte, head of the European Parliament Media Services Unit, on Wednesday awarded certificates to participants in the second training for young journalists. Fourteen journalists took part in the second training programme, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) in partnership with the European Parliament.

The functioning of the EU institutions, European policies and their implementation in the Member States based on EU values were the focus of the training programme. The national module of the three-day training ended on Wednesday. Bulgaria is one of the eight countries running the training programme for young journalists.

In her address to the participants, De Marte underlined the importance of the European elections. Voting and the youth vote matter, said Raffaella de Marte. Many young people say they are pro-European, they defend European values, but when the elections come they are at home, on the beach, and they say they don't care, she stressed.

The role of the EU has increased, De Marte noted, giving as an example the COVID pandemic and the situation in Ukraine. In her words, countries are divided on what is happening in Ukraine, but the EU can nevertheless cope with the challenges of a world that is becoming increasingly complex. People need to understand how the EU's democratic model works and why European elections are important, she added.
