"I am grateful that the Sofia Opera is visiting Turkiye for the first time, the Director of the Sofia Opera and Ballet, Academician Plamen Kartaloff said at a meeting titled Culture and Education: a Bridge between Bulgaria and Turkiye. The event took place on Tuesday at the BTA Press Club in Ankara and was held on the occasion of the staging of Puccini's Tosca by the Sofia Opera and Ballet in Ankara and Istanbul.

"We hope that this project will bear the fruits of a cooperation - for Sofia to be part of Turkiye's culture and Turkiye to be part of Bulgaria's culture," said Kartaloff, adding that such an international project could provide occasions for celebrations in the future, such as Puccini's Tosca, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkiye and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.

The gala tour is held under the auspices Bulgaria's and Turkiye's first ladies, Desislava Radeva and Emin Erdogan.

Tosca premiered at the Sofia Opera on 12 November 2011. The very next year the Sofia Opera toured Japan with it.

Sunay Muratov, who will conduct Tosca in Ankara and Istanbul under the direction of Plamen Kartaloff, said that culture, and in particular the art of opera, is something universal and is a way to bring two nations closer together. The conductor, who has dual Bulgarian and Turkish citizenship, was introduced by BTA Director General Kiril Valchev as "the embodiment of a bridge between Bulgaria and Turkiye in the field of culture".

Muratov said that he was proud to be part of this large-scale initiative and expressed confidence that the cooperation between the Sofia and Ankara Opera will continue.

"We have not seen such an initiative in a long time - maybe it is even the first time for such institutions to cooperate. I am sure that this will continue in the future. I hope that we will build the groundwork for a collaboration that will continue," the conductor said.
