The 11th edition of the Liszt-Bartók Piano Competition will run in Sofia from December 1 to 3, the organizers from the Liszt Institute announced Monday. Traditionally, the event is dedicated to the works of Hungarian composers and musicians Ferenc Liszt and Béla Bartók, but this year it will also honour composer György Ligeti on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birth.

The organisers aim to invite pianists from secondary and higher music schools from across the country and abroad. In doing so, they hope to continue to support and develop interest in the music of Liszt and Bartók, who were hugely influential in the development of music in the 20th and 21st century.

The competition is being organized under the patronage of the Bulgarian Culture Minister Krastyu Krastev.

Ever since its conception in 1989, it is held every two years (with some interruptions).

This year participants will compete in four age groups - up to 11, 15, 19 and 32 years. The official opening will be held at the National Music Academy with a concert by members of the jury. The winner in the competition will perform at a gala concert.
