Sofia's second archaeological park, Late Antique Mausoleum in Lozenets borough, welcomed its first visitors on Friday. It was officially unveiled by Sofia Mayor Yordanka Fandakova on Thursday.
Regional History Museum Director Veneta Hadzhiyska said that the first archaeological research at the site date back to the mid-20th century, when the building was partially researched and described as a large basilica. Around 50 years later, it was established that the building was a mausoleum owned by a rich family from the mid-4th century.
The mausoleum was looted back in antiquity, but the archaeologists have found valuable artifacts that are now stored at the Sofia Museum. According to Hadzhiyska, the most important find is a vase made of two types of glass (vas diatretum). Only two such vases have been found in Bulgaria and a dozen in the world, she specified.
The park welcomes visitors from 10 am to 5 pm (7 pm in the summer). Access is free. Available are a visitors' centre, a special space for children, a children's playground, and an information centre of the Regional History Museum.
Sofia's first archaeological park is Western Gate of Serdica.
