The Carlone Hall of the Vienna Baroque castle Upper Belvedere is showing works by Bulgarian-born Vienna-based artist Michail Michailov. On display are the modular series Dust to Dust, previously exhibited at the Bulgarian Pavilion at the 2022 Venice Biennale.

Often unnoticed vestiges of time, like dust, hair, marks, and stains, challenge the visitor to consider their value and existence. Michailov's colored pencil drawings, like the ceiling fresco in the Baroque Carlone Hall, are based on the illusionist technique of trompe-l'œil.

In the words of curator Stella Rollig, Michailov aims to offer the public an experience that only art can evoke. The series on display in the Salle Carlone astonishes and entertains.

The artist said of his works that while science explores the composition of matter, he tries to understand the meaning of matter through the the means of art.
