In 2022, 644,200 cinema tickets were purchased in Bulgaria, Executive Director of the Bulgarian National Film Center, Petar Todorov, said at the House of Cinema on Thursday. Ticket revenues for Bulgarian films hit a record high with BGN 6 million.

Bulgarian films sold 300,810 tickets between January 1 and October 16, and the revenue generated amounted to BGN 3,075,348.

Todorov said: "This year is moving a bit more slowly, as there was a huge hole between April and September. There were practically no premieres of new Bulgarian films then. Before that, there was one every week, there were even two a week. Now, by the end of the year, premieres are lined up almost every Friday".

Todorov reported that the Film Center is working with cinemas to achieve even distribution of films and avoid similar periods of no new Bulgarian premieres in the future.

The head of the Film Center commented on the political turmoil over the past 20 months, saying: "In 20 months, four ministers of culture have changed, and once it was only the minister of culture that was changed in the whole government. All these processes have led to uncertainty about funding and long-term plans and strategies. The good news is that the current leadership of the Ministry of Culture has the understanding and support to make things work in the film industry".
