A photo exhibition dubbed "The Wild Heart of Sofia", featuring the zoo of the Bulgarian capital, will be staged in the Outdoor Gallery in front of the NDK convention centre between October 24 and November 7, City Hall said on Monday.

The show will present the newest and most exotic animals of the Sofia Zoo, which inhabit an environment very similar to their natural surroundings. Viewers will be able to see rare and endangered species such as tigers, snow leopards, Persian leopards, pygmy hippopotamuses, sloth bears, antelopes, gibbons, vultures and hornbills, among other inhabitants of the zoo, photographed by various artists and making a strong impression with their beauty and variety. The Indian elephants Frossya and Louisa, which arrived in Sofia in September, will be presented as well.

All these animals, and many more, live in the wild heart of Sofia, the city zoo, which is home to over 250 species from all over the world. It is the largest and oldest zoo in the Balkans.

This year is the 135th anniversary of the establishment of the Sofia Zoo. Earlier in 2023, it joined the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria. It shares in 25 animal breeding and recovery programmes.

The upcoming exhibition is curated by Katerina Zareva-Simeonova, who heads the Environmental Research and Study Centre at the Sofia Zoo.
