Bulgarian students performed brilliantly at the most prestigious science competition of the year - the 55th International Chemistry Olympiad in Zurich, the Natural Sciences Olympic Teams Association said on Tuesday. All four Bulgarian high school students won medals - two gold and two silver. A total of 340 students from 86 countries took part in the competition.

The gold medals went to Viktor Lilov (11th grade, Sofia High School of Mathematics) and Krum Alexandrov (12th grade, Pleven High School of Mathematics), while the silver medals went to Preslav Georgiev (11th grade, Sofia High School of Mathematics) and Yavor Hristov (11th grade, Sofia High School of Mathematics).

Their supervisors were Assoc. Prof. Donka Tasheva and Prof. Penka Vassileva from the Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy at Sofia University.

The International Chemistry Olympiad was held for the first time in 1968 in Czechoslovakia, when Bulgaria took part as an observer. The country became a regular participant from the following year. Bulgaria hosted the Olympiad in 1973 and 1981.
