Bulgarian students won 79 medals, including 21 gold medals, in the previous 19 editions of the International Linguistics Olympiad, said Education Minister Galin Tsokov on Monday in Bansko during the opening of the 20th edition of the event. In the team competitions, the country won 7 cups, 2 of which golden.

"A new National STEM Centre is to be built, where even more modern conditions will be provided for the preparation for the Linguistics Olympiads, as well as for other disciplines," Tsokov added. He pointed out that the laboratories in the new National STEM Centre will be equipped in consultation with the team leaders in order to purchase the most appropriate equipment for the Olympians.

"The secured funding is for BGN 18 million and we hope that the better facilities will contribute to even higher results of the Bulgarian athletes in the international Olympiads," Tsokov noted.

In 2023, the International Linguistics Olympiad will feature 51 teams with over 200 youths from all over the world.

"I hope that you will have the opportunity not only to show your knowledge and skills in the field of linguistics, but also to get to know each other, to communicate, make contacts and find new friendships. Along with that, enjoy the beautiful Bulgarian nature," Tsokov addressed the participants.

High school students will compete in individual and team competitions, with the goal of solving extremely complex problems with language material in a language unfamiliar to the solvers. The individual competition will be on Tuesday, when participants will have to solve five problems in six hours. The team competition will be on Thursday. In it, they will work as a team, and the tasks will be usually more complex and more similar to real-life situations that linguistic scientists encounter. On Friday, solutions will be presented and prizes will be awarded to the winners.
