On Tuesday Bulgaria celebrates 186 years since the birth of Vasil Levski, who was born in Karlovo on July 18, 1837. There were celebrations and a commemoration of the anniversary throughout the country.

Vasil Levski was the ideologist of the Bulgarian national revolution, the organizer and leader of the Bulgarian national liberation movement during the Turkish rule.

After his death, the nickname of the Apostle of Freedom, or just the Apostle, came into widespread use, for which writer Ivan Vazov is credited.

To mark the 186th anniversary of the birth of the Apostle, President Rumen Radev visited Karlovo, where he received the honorary formation of representative units of the Bulgarian Army.

In Sozopol, Vice President Iliana Iotova unveiled a bust-monument to the national hero.

In Sofia, a ceremony was held at 11 am in front of the bust-monument of the Apostle of Freedom in the Borisova Garden. The programme was attended by the Guard representative brass band. The celebration is part of the Sofia Municipality's Calendar of Cultural Events.
