Vice President Iliana Iotova said on Tuesday that the presidential institution continues to demand greater municipal autonomy, as recent events [the floods along the Black Sea coast] have shown that municipalities are unable to act. She was speaking at an awards ceremony for the 19th Mayor of the Year national competition, which took place in Sofia.

Iotova presented awards to mayors Diana Ovcharova of Ivaylovgrad, Stancho Stavrev of Tundzha, and Valentin Revanski of Yambol in the small, medium-sized and large municipality categories, respectively.

She told the mayors that if they had had more powers and opportunities, the disasters might not have happened, and that the much-discussed decentralization has still not occurred.

The Vice President reiterated the presidential institution's respect for local authorities, noting that the event honours the work of mayors. According to Iotova, this would serve as a powerful incentive for their future actions, politics, and ideas. She said that the Mayor of the Year competition is a very important event as it conveys citizens' respect for the local authorities closest to them. Mayors carry huge burdens, expectations and responsibilities. Every day, they must solve people's problems, meet their expectations and deal with the crises that have flooded the country in recent months. "But you are coping," Iotova told the mayors. She believes that the development of the entire country depends on mayors.
