Citizens gathered for a protest mottoed “Trash for the Trash” in front of the headquarters of MRF - New Beginning in Sofia on Friday. The protest was organized by the BOEC civil movement, which called on residents of the Lyulin and Krasno Selo boroughs to collect their trash and bring it to the headquarters.
The protesters painted a large “D” in black paint and threw bags of trash in front of the party's headquarters. "We are turning the mafia's weapon against them,” said BOEC head Georgi Georgiev.
"D" is the first letter in the name of the MRF - New Beginning leader, Delyan Peevski.
The entrance to the building was guarded by police officers.
Sofia's Lyulin and Krasno Selo boroughs have been experiencing a waste collection crisis since October 5. It erupted after Sofia Municipality refused to sign new waste collection contracts, arguing that the only remaining bidder demanded prices more than three times the market rate. Mayor Vassil Terziev has said Sofia Municipality would not pay a protection racket fee and would not yield to “mafia practices”.
