The Dunav German-Bulgarian Society in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, has nominated Iskra Karageorgieva for the Saint Zlata of Meglen Award in 2025, the Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad (EABA) said on Friday.

“Karageorgieva is the heart and driving force of the Bulgarian community in Dusseldorf. She built a school structure and a folk dance school, organized cultural events, theatre performances, cinema screenings and concerts and opened a Bulgarian Literature section in the city library,” the EABA emphasized.

As the organizer of the Bulgarian language school, Karageorgieva unites parents, teachers and children around the cause of preserving Bulgarian identity, the executive agency pointed out, adding that she also coordinates the participation of the Dunav Dance Ensemble in various concerts and festivals, thus creating bridges between Bulgaria and Germany.

“Her activities encompass the local community, but go beyond the borders of Germany, turning her into an inspiring example of dedication and love for the homeland,” the EABA stated.

On October 15, the EABA will present its annual Bulgarian Woman of the Year – Saint Zlata of Meglen Award. Twenty nominations have been received from 11 countries. BTA will present the nominees in a series of articles.
