It takes much more than changing the law to improve road safety, National Assembly Chair Nataliya Kiselova said on Sunday. "Administrative measures, certainly. Road surfaces also matter, but we cannot say they are the only cause of traffic accidents. The behaviour of drivers and other traffic participants poses a very serious problem. The kind of aggressiveness we have witnessed over the last few years is at the heart of the matter. Speeding, failure to adjust one’s driving to the road conditions, aggressive behaviour of all drivers,” Kiselova said in a comment to journalists in Lovech, where she attended a traditional Tsvetnitsa (Palm Sunday) festival.

She noted that during its latest session the National Assembly held two earnest discussions with families of child victims of traffic accidents. The meetings were followed by the setting up of an ad hoc committee, which continues to work. It is hearing all parties concerned with traffic safety. A report and proposals for legislative amendments are due in May.

Six bills to amend the Road Traffic Act passed on first reading on Friday, Kiselova recalled.
