Protests against animal cruelty and abuse were held in Sofia, Plovdiv and other major cities in Bulgaria. The protest in Sofia blocked the area in front of the Palace of Justice. The demonstrations were sparked by the case of two individuals from Pernik who were charged by the prosecution with causing the death of animals for financial gain. The case led to pubic outrage after the two suspects were found to have tortured and killed animals for payment by foreign clients.

Many of the protesters held signs demanding severe punishments for animal abuse. Others called for stricter laws, real enforcement of penalties, and tighter control over online platforms that distribute such content.

Protesters argued that cruelty to animals is a sign of an ailing society. They announced that similar protests would take place in different cities across the country next Saturday.

Meanwhile, proposals for stricter penalties for animal abuse have been published for public discussion.

The proposed amendments introduce two new aggravated offenses—when the act is recorded for distribution or committed for financial gain. In these cases, the proposed penalty is imprisonment from three to ten years and a fine ranging from BGN 5,000 to 20,000.
