A discussion forum on the topic "Protection of natural waters. Monitoring and purification of drinking water" was held on Friday at the Rectorate of the Chemical Technology and Metallurgical University (CTMU) in Sofia.

The forum was organized on the occasion of World Water Day, which has been celebrated on March 22 since 1993. Every year, the Bulgarian Water Association (BWA) marks the day with initiatives, part of which are a photo exhibition and a discussion forum. This year, the theme of the photo contest is "Stories about Water". Out of 170 received photos, 40 were selected and exhibited on the facade of the CTMU Rectorate. A jury will determine which of them will receive an award.

Minister of Environment and Water Manol Genov noted that this day draws public attention to the importance of drinking water and the protection of water resources.

The motto of this year's World Water Day is "Glacier Conservation". "This theme emphasizes the need for global action for the sustainable management of glacial meltwater and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in order to ensure vital water resources for the future," said Minister Genov. He pointed out that the protection of glaciers is an important global task.

Genov pointed out that World Water Day sends the message that people should work together, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and manage meltwater in a sustainable manner. “We should also support global and local initiatives to protect the environment and be responsible in the consumption of water resources,” he added.

The issue of reliable provision of quality water for the population is increasingly and acutely on the agenda. Therefore, securing investments for the sector is a necessary prerequisite for continuing the process of building modern water treatment plants, said Minister of Agriculture and Food Georgi Tahov in his welcome speech.

"Water is not just a resource, it is life. It connects people, ecosystems and economies. But we increasingly see challenges such as pollution, shortages and unsustainable management. That is why we are here today to talk, to learn, and above all to act for its protection," said BWA Chairman Ivan Ivanov. He called on people to use this day to inspire change in their personal habits, policies and decisions that they make every day.
