A protest was held outside Bulgaria’s National Assembly on Saturday by a group of civic organizations and political parties, including Vazrazhdane and Velichie, calling for the resignation of the government and the Central Election Commission leadership.
The protest took place without incident, and traffic in the area was not disrupted.
The group, named “United in seeking the resignation of the government and the dissolution of the 51st illegitimate National Assembly", also demanded that amendments to the Election Code proposed by a national roundtable be adopted, that the Constitutional Court declare the recent constitutional revisions unconstitutional and that the President’s power to appoint a caretaker prime minister be restored. They also called for the annulment of the October 2024 parliamentary elections, the dissolution of the 51st National Assembly, and the holding of early elections.
The protesters argue that the current Parliament is illegitimate and the recent Constitutional Court's decision proves it.
On Thursday, the Court ruled that 16 MPs in the 51st National Assembly were unlawfully elected on October 27, 2024.
The protestors said that a tent camp would be set up outside the Parliament building on Monday.
