Bulgaria’s Economy and Industry Minister Peter Dilov and Kazakhstan’s Ambassador in Sofia, Viktor Temirbayev, have discussed ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, Dilov’s Ministry said in a press release on Monday. A fourfold increase in last year’s trade between Bulgaria and Kazakhstan was reported during the meeting.

Dilov and Temirbayev highlighted the untapped potential in bilateral trade and economic relations and agreed on the need to expand cooperation in sectors such as transit and transport development, agriculture, energy and green technologies, critical raw materials, and pharmaceuticals, among others.

Minister Dilov said that there are opportunities to boost the mutual exchange of goods and advance economic cooperation between Bulgaria and Kazakhstan. He stressed the need for fostering more joint initiatives involving representatives of businesses and institutions from both sides.

Ambassador Temirbayev noted that Bulgaria is an important strategic partner for Kazakhstan in Southeast Europe. He said that the election of a regular government in this country would likely provide fresh momentum for bilateral relations. Kazakhstan is among Bulgaria's top six non-EU trading partners for 2024, he noted, adding that the Bulgarian-Kazakh Chamber of Commerce and Industry will also contribute to deepening bilateral economic relations.

The two also discussed plans to convene a meeting of the Intergovernmental Bulgarian-Kazakh Commission for Economic Cooperation in the first half of 2025, with Dilov proposing that it be paired with a business forum. Both agreed that holding the fifth session of the Commission would be crucial for advancing trade, economic, and investment relations between the two countries.
