Bulgaria’s President Rumen Radev honoured this country’s top skiing and snowboarding athletes for the 2024/2025 winter season at a ceremony in the Coat of Arms at the Presidential Administration building on Tuesday. The head of State awarded the Presidential Badge of Honour to snowboarder Tervel Zamfirov, who became world champion in the men's parallel slalom at the Snowboard World Championships in Switzerland. His sister, 15-year-old Malena Zamfirova, also received the Presidential Badge of Honour for her performance – finishing seventh in the women's parallel giant slalom at the World Championships in Switzerland and placing second in the World Cup event in Krynica.

Plaquettes of honour were presented to Radoslav Yankov, who finished third in the men's parallel giant slalom at the FIS Snowboard World Cup, and to alpine skier Albert Popov, who made history by winning the World Cup slalom in Madonna di Campiglio - Bulgaria’s first victory in the event in 45 years.

Snowboard coaches Anatoli Zamfirov and Georgi Atanasov and alpine ski coach Ivailo Borisov received diplomas from the head of State.

“Dear athletes, not only have you reached the top, but you have once again proven that you are among the most honourable ambassadors of our country. Through your achievements, you are making the entire world talk about Bulgaria again,” President Radev said in his speech. “You prove in an undeniable way that sport makes our young people stronger, more resilient, more driven, much more prepared for the future and for any challenges that lie ahead,” he added.
