Agriculture and Food Minister Georgi Tahov pruned a newly planted vine at Peristera Fortress and officially opened the Wine Festival in Peshtera, Peshtera Municipality press service said on Saturday.
"This festival honours the work of vine growers and reflects our respect for Bulgaria’s winemaking traditions," Tahov said. He added that the event is an opportunity to celebrate both the quality of Bulgarian wines and the dedication of local producers.
Tahov wished all participating winemakers a successful year and highlighted the strong performance of Bulgarian grape varieties. "Bulgaria is recognized as a wine tourism destination, and our wines are gaining popularity worldwide," he said, adding that "the viticulture and winemaking sector is becoming increasingly important to the national economy."
The Agriculture Ministry reported that Bulgaria produced over 67 million litres of wine in 2024 and exported nearly 27 million litres, with sectoral support provided through various ministry programs.
Tahov and Peshtera Mayor Yordan Mladenov presented awards for the best young homemade red wine, Peshtera Municipality press service said.
