In a comment after President Donald Trump's inauguration Monday, Continue the Change co-leader Kiril Petkov said "there are things of mutual interest" that the two countries "need to move forward". Petkov and Continue the Change co-leader Assen Vassilev were in Washington to attend the inaugural events.
Sharing his impressions of his visit to the US in a Facebook post, Petkov wrote: "After my meetings tomorrow, I am coming home with the deep awareness that there are things of mutual interest that we need to move forward and that we need to continue dialogue with the new administration: based on practical policies that Bulgaria can benefit from, and not on ideology."
Petkov said that his Washington agenda included meetings with Republicans who will be part of the new administrations, and with "friends from the Democratic Party". Also, he attended a meeting of Republican governors, members of Congress and Senate, and the events in the Capital One arena, where over 12,000 Trump supporters attended. "Clearly everyone understood that the strength of the new administration is in the strong enthusiasm of ordinary people in the Heartland," wrote Petkov.
He also said that he accepted the invitation to attend the inauguration in order "to receive first-hand information about the direction the world's biggest economy is headed".
