A real and responsible attempt to form a government must be made in the 51st National Assembly in order to avoid pushing the country towards another early elections and further deepening the crisis of parliamentary democracy, the leadership and MPs of Democratic Bulgaria said in a position sent out to the media on Monday. The position is to be discussed at a meeting of the parliamentary group of Continue the Change - Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB).
The statement also points out that the government and the parliamentary majority behind it should adhere to a governance programme guaranteeing the preservation of the parliamentary model of democracy, the fight against corruption and the renewal of the justice system, the implementation of the measures in the declaration proposed by CC-DB to rid the institutions and the election process of corrupt influences, and to preserve and upgrade the Euro-Atlantic direction of Bulgaria's development.
According to Democratic Bulgaria, efforts should be directed towards securing broad parliamentary support based on political modesty and respect for the results and programmes of all parties, but also in further developing efforts to form a broad political consensus to isolate pro-corruption and anti-European forces from State governance.
A priority national task is to fill the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) and the Inspectorate of the SJC in a way that ensures the highest standards of professionalism and integrity, as well as cleansing the judiciary of corrupt and political influences. The elections for Prosecutor General and President of the Supreme Administrative Court must be conducted by the new composition of the SJC to ensure the continuation of reforms and public confidence in the justice system. Similarly, the filling of the independent regulators and oversight bodies should ensure they are purged of corrupt influences and are serving the public interest, the DB said.
Democratic Bulgaria recognizes that the severe political crisis can only be overcome through the formation of an authentic Euro-Atlantic, reformist and anti-corruption government, which will begin to permanently remove Delyan Peevski's instruments of influence in the judiciary, regulators, and security services.
