President Rumen Radev on Friday tasked caretaker prime minister designate Goritsa Grancharova-Kozhareva with forming a caretaker government. Earlier in the day, the head of State designated the National Audit Office Vice-President as a candidate for caretaker prime minister.
Others, besides Dimitar Glavchev, have expressed readiness to take over the post of caretaker prime minister, Rumen Radev said on Thursday during consultations with the parliamentary political formations on the composition of a caretaker cabinet. According to Radev, the situation is different from the previous time when only Dimitar Glavchev made this commitment. The head of State did not name the other willing candidates, in his words, in order not to "throw names in the public space".
"I take on this mandate with a clear sense of responsibility to form a government, and I will form a cabinet to ensure the normal functioning of the State until a regular government is formed. The main task will be to organize and hold fair elections," Grancharova-Kozhareva told President Radev.
"I would like to thank you for accepting this important and responsible task, but I would also like to assure you that you will rely only on yourselves in its implementation. In this situation, you are the only possible option," Radev said, adding that her extensive administrative experience would help her.
The President thanked caretaker Prime Minister Dimitar Glavchev for his efforts and the results achieved, and especially for taking responsibility at a difficult time when all other potential candidates had declined.
"Whenever I have formed caretaker cabinets, I have always tried to make sure that the caretaker prime minister is equidistant from the parties on the current political stage and not a bright political figure. There was no way this principle could be applied to the election of Dimitar Glavchev because the refusal of all the others left me without a choice," Radev said.
Over the past months, tensions have built up around Glavchev cabinet due to suspicions of political use of caretaker power. I have always believed that crisis caretaker governments are meant to calm an already tense political situation, not to further strain it. Dimitar Glavchev's cabinet in this situation would hardly achieve this goal, especially against the backdrop of the already aggravated election campaign in some very contested future elections. I congratulate him for the fact that he himself realized the reality and undertook a worthy act," the head of State added.
