Sofia has been elected a member of the Executive Committee of Eurocities at the organization's latest annual conference, held in the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca, Sofia Municipality said on its website on Wednesday.
In this way, the Bulgarian capital will have access to expertise and opportunities to cooperate with other cities for better urban policies, the press release said.
"Sofia's inclusion in the Executive Committee of Eurocities underlines the capital's belonging to sustainable urban development," Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev was quoted as saying.
As part of the Executive Committee, Sofia will have direct input into key policy decisions affecting cities across Europe. This ensures that Sofia's needs and perspectives are taken into account at the highest level of city governance. Sofia will be able to share its innovative solutions and successful initiatives with other European cities, thus fostering a culture of knowledge exchange and mutual learning, town hall said.
"The city's inclusion in the international network gives Sofia visibility on the European stage and its attractiveness for potential investment, tourism and international partnerships.
The Eurocities network was established in 1986. Its aim is to improve the quality of life and well-being of all communities. It provides a platform for sharing knowledge and ideas, exploring common challenges and developing innovative solutions.
As of June 2024, over 200 major cities representing over 150 million people from 38 countries inside and outside the European Union are members of the organization.
