Head of the Varna regional laboratory at the Executive Environment Agency (EEA) Merdzhan Moharem said on Tuesday that sea water quality is satisfactory. Studies showed all indicators to be within acceptable limits. Following an incident at the Nova Kakhovka reservoir in Ukraine, the laboratory had been conducting regular marine water monitoring.

Acting executive director of EEA Rosalina Indzhieva confirmed that Bulgaria's water quality standards match those of Europe. The EEA's main role is to provide reliable, high-quality data. The Agency operates 15 regional laboratories, all accredited and compliant with EU standards. These laboratories perform tests on water, air, and soil quality, and monitor radiation levels.

According to Moharem, the laboratory's responsibilities extend beyond supporting the supervisory tasks of the Basin Directorate and the Regional Inspectorate of Environment and Water. "A surge in plankton population over the summer changes sea water colour, which leads to numerous public alerts", he added.
